Tambov State University named after G.R.Derzhavin begins its history from.

In 1918, the State University was opened in Tambov, the first higher educational institution on the Tambov land. Lectures were delivered mainly by visiting professors and teachers of Moscow University. Having existed for three years, the university was closed, but it left a mark on the development of education in the region: cooperative courses, centers for the elimination of illiteracy, and the Institute of Public Education were organized at the university. Later the Institute of Public Education was transformed into a Pedagogical Institute.

Tambov State University was created by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on December 29, 1994 by merging and. The university is located in 5 educational buildings with a total area of ​​50 thousand square meters. m.

In December 1995, by unanimous decision of the conference of the faculty, students, graduate students and staff for the post of rector of TSU. G.R.Derzhavin was elected Yuriev Vladislav Mikhailovich, who subsequently held this position for twenty years.

As a result of the merger of the natural-geographical and chemical-biological faculties, the natural science faculty was formed with seven departments (dean E. A. Ganzha). 1994 marked the 35th anniversary of the scientific and practical laboratory of school cartography, which prepared 3 editions of the Atlas of the Tambov Region (headed by A. Kirillov). Professional cadres were trained at the faculties: Physics and Mathematics (Dean A. A. Sletkov), Romance and Germanic Philology (Dean N. P. Dronova). In September 1995, the Department of Journalism was opened at the Faculty of Philology (Dean N. L. Potanin). The Department of the Russian Language became one of the founders of the Russian Humanitarian and Political Lyceum, which opened in 1994. The merger with the Institute of Culture expanded the university's specialization in the faculties of folk art (dean B.S.Geyko), cultural studies (dean V.A.Karimov), information and library (dean B.V. Borisov).

Faculty physical culture, which passed in 1990 to a 5-year period of study, provided students with the following specialties: physical education teacher and school psychologist, physical education and physiotherapy exercises.

More than 40 professors, doctors of sciences worked at the university in the 1990s; about 20 professors, candidates of science, who carried out proactive scientific research and improved the educational work of the university.

In March 1996, the Academic Council of the university adopted the “Concept for the development of TSU named after G. R. Derzhavin for 1996-2000. " These years have become a period of rapid development of science at the university, especially in terms of training young scientific personnel. Tambov State University named after G.R. Today training at TSU named after G.R.
