History of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy

In 1934, it was decided to organize an exhibition space to showcase achievements in the field of agriculture and collectivization. The opening was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Soviet power. The history of VDNKh is inseparably linked with numerous scandals and tragic fates of Soviet architects. The exhibition was rebuilt many times. The pavilions were demolished and rebuilt to please the new government. Under Khrushchev, the territory of the Exhibition became a battleground for two superpowers. In 1959, the Vice President of the United States, Richard Nixon, attended the Exhibition.

At present, VDNKh has begun a large-scale reconstruction of utility networks and buildings. The video surveillance and control systems are being modernized, which will make it possible to secure the visitors of the Exhibition. In addition, free Wi-Fi Internet access will now work throughout the park. The completion of the work is planned for 2018. The exhibition space is divided into seven thematic zones: Central Alley, EXPO zone, Ostankino Park, Landscape Park, Amusement Park, Crafts Park, Knowledge Park. Soon VDNKh will become the main educational and entertainment platform in Russia, which can be visited by up to 40 million people annually.

The central entrance is located on the side of Prospekt Mira, behind the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics. At the top of the five-span arch, there is a monument to the Tractor Driver and Collective Farm Woman. The total height is 32 meters. The central entrance was built by the architect I. Melchakov in 1954. The statue was the emblem of the 1939 Exhibition and stood in front of the Central Pavilion. During the construction of the arch, it was moved and installed on the roof. From here, the route begins along the main alley, on which the most interesting pavilions of VDNKh are located.

Pavilion "Worker and Collective Farm Woman"

The open-air complex began its work as a concert venue relatively recently, but has already gained popularity among the townspeople.

    Exhibitions in 2019

For many years VDNKh has been considered the main venue for all industry exhibitions, forums, congresses, corporate events and concerts. They are divided into two groups: own and guest projects. All events take place throughout the year, both outdoors and in closed pavilions. For these purposes, two huge two-storey complexes with space for temporary development were erected, as well as conference rooms.

The International Exhibition Complex is located in Pavilion No. 75 to the right of the Central Entrance. Its area is over 24,000 square meters. Pavilion 69 - Specialized Exhibition Complex is located nearby. Its total exhibition space, together with conference rooms, reaches 16,000 square meters. VDNKh is the ideological platform of the Soviet Union, where all the significant achievements of the union republics that are part of the USSR were demonstrated for several decades. Currently, VDNKh is a cultural and exhibition complex where you can visit many exhibitions and expositions, or you can leisurely stroll along the alleys along the most beautiful fountains, visit the city farm and landscape park.

VDNKh - how to get there by metro

VDNKh is a very large territory and there are more than 10 entrances to it, they are located along the entire perimeter of the exhibition. But the most interesting and convenient way to start the inspection is from the main alley, the symmetry of the buildings on which makes you admire the scale. Therefore, it is best to enter VDNKh through the main entrance located next to the VDNKh metro station. The VDNKh station is located on the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya branch of the Moscow metro, in the diagrams the branch is shown in orange. The station, like the entire exhibition of the achievements of the national economy, is located strictly in the northern part of the capital. But after getting off the metro, you shouldn't rush to VDNKh. First, we will walk through a park dedicated to Soviet achievements in cosmonautics.

    Cosmopark at VDNKh

The park in its current form was opened in 2008, although the main attractions of the cosmopark have been flaunting here for more than 50 years. The obelisk to the Conquerors of Space in the form of a launching rocket with a train was opened in 1964. with VDNKh, only slightly reduced, was installed in the Saratov region, at the landing site of the first cosmonaut Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin.

The renewed alley of cosmonauts appeared to the eyes of Muscovites and guests of the capital in 2008, when the solar system and the Korolev monument were installed here. The famous Cosmos hotel, located to the right of the cosmopark, is also clearly visible in the panorama.

Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy

VDNKh is a unique exhibition that opened in 1954 as a symbol of all the achievements of the people's republics that are part of the USSR. Inside the complex, thematic pavilions were organized, for each of the union republics, where they presented their most outstanding achievements. The exhibition functions to this day. All exhibitions and events can be found on the official VDNKh website. The alley of fountains starts from the central entrance to VDNKh.

A beautiful alley, on both sides of which there are small fountains, leads us to the main pavilion of VDNKh, which is called Pavilion No. 1 “Central”. Once upon a time, this pavilion demonstrated the main achievements of building a socialist state.

Fountain "Friendship of Peoples" at VDNKh

The main fountain of the Soviet Union is located just behind Pavilion No. 1. This is the Friendship of Peoples fountain. The sculptural composition of the fountain depicts all the union republics of the USSR in the form of girls dressed in national costumes, with attributes somehow reflecting the uniqueness of each republic.

And around the fountain, at some distance, the main pavilions of the exhibition of the achievements of the national economy are located.

The Friendship of Peoples fountain was opened in 1954 and one curious fact is associated with it. There are 16 sculptures of girls around the fountain, which corresponds to the number of republics before 1956. But in 1956 the Karelo-Finnish SSR was abolished and renamed the Autonomous Republic of Karelia. Thus, there is an extra girl at the fountain. And they did not remove the statue, so as not to violate the compositional component of the fountain. Knowing this fact, it will be more interesting for you to explore the sculptures around the fountain.

But it will be difficult to determine the mysterious girl on your own. Therefore, here is the search scheme. Three girls are looking at the central entrance and the main pavilion of VDNKh: Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. A Russian girl can be recognized by a huge shock of ears in her hand.

The sought-after Karelian-Finnish woman is installed on the back of the fountain, she looks exactly in the opposite direction. You can recognize a girl by a small Christmas tree located at her feet.

    Fountain "Stone Flower" at VDNKh

Behind the Druzhba Narodov fountain, on the Kolkhoz Square, there is a unique fountain with the beautiful name “Stone Flower”. The fountain owes its name to the writer Bazhov, from whose light pen many beautiful fairy tales have flown, including the fairy tale about a stone flower.

But not only the name is limited to the influence of the "Ural Tales" on the fountain. The central fountain, depicted in the form of a flower, is decorated with mosaics and many details.

Along the perimeter, the fountain is decorated with bronze dishes, and swans shoot jets of water.

Remarkable is the fact, and this is what makes the fountain unique, that the "Stone Flower" was the first light and music fountain in the USSR and throughout the world. Behind the fountain is pavilion No. 58 "Agriculture", formerly the pavilion "Ukraine". And on the right is pavilion 59 "Grain".

    Attractions VDNKh

To the left of the fountain there is pavilion No. 18 “Republic of Belarus”.

If we continue to move straight, then we go to the Industrial Square, where the Yak-42 aircraft, the Mi-8T helicopter and the Su-27 fighter are installed, and the main attraction of the square is, of course, the Vostok rocket.

The day was really hot and we went to Grocery store №1 to hide from the sun and replenish fresh water supplies. Having come here, we experienced a real nostalgia for Soviet childhood.

Further along Architectural Avenue, turning to the Okruzhnaya Alley to the left, we reached the city farm. The farm has an official website where you can view the schedule of activities and prices. In fact, the city farm is a contact zoo, where you and your children can get acquainted with domesticated animals and understand the principles of farm management, all kinds of master classes and excursions are also held here.

Opposite the city farm, we see one of four ponds in the pond system of the Main Botanical Garden and VDNKh.

The main botanical garden itself. N.V. Tsitsina is located on the right hand side of the ponds; in the garden, as well as in the entire territory of VDNKh, you can ride a bike rented here.

We reached the next pond, where the Golden Ear fountain flaunts. Like many other things at VDNKh, the fountain was opened back in 1954, therefore, due to wear and tear, its engineering communications lost their functionality. The reconstruction work, during which the fountain could work at full capacity, has not yet begun.

From the ponds we returned to the main pavilions of the exhibition, from here we can already see pavilion 34 "Mechanical Engineering", behind it is the Industry Square. From here we went in the direction of the landscape park and the Moscow Moskvarium.

And this is the same oceanarium, which by its size has overtaken, once leading in this indicator,. Now Moskvarium is the largest oceanarium in Russia. On the official website of the Moskvarium, you can get acquainted with the prices and events of the aquarium.

You can walk at VDNKh all day long, and it will still be difficult to get around all the pavilions and exhibitions. Especially if you stop everywhere and visit everything. If you visit the city farm and the Moskvarium, then you will definitely not have time to explore the rest of the sights, and there is also a museum of cosmonautics and the Ostankino TV tower next to VDNKh. Therefore, if you are going to devote only one daylight to visiting VDNKh, you will have to sweat a lot, deciding which sights to visit. We only managed to rush like a hurricane along the alleys and avenues of the exhibition of the achievements of the national economy. Therefore, without a doubt, we will return here again and visit the Moskvarium and the city farm and the Ostankino tower. And we will take a photo of the monument "Worker and Collective Farm Woman", which we have not noticed, which is installed to the right of the central entrance to VDNKh.

In Moscow, or simply VDNKh, it is one of the main attractions of the capital, and, perhaps, of the whole world, because this exhibition and museum complex has no analogues. VDNKh receives more than 20 million guests a year, its area, together with the Botanical Garden and Ostankino Park, is over 500 hectares, and all pavilions are 134 square meters. At VDNKh there is something interesting for any person, regardless of their age or nationality.

The history of the creation of VDNKh

Moscow saw the exhibition complex in 1939, and over the years of its existence, it has changed its name more than once and came from heyday to decline. Initially, VDNKh was an agricultural exhibition that was evacuated to Chelyabinsk during the Second World War. After the war, the complex was rebuilt and given the status of an exhibition of the national economy. During the Soviet period, many objects of cultural and historical significance were built on the territory of VDNKh, including the sculpture "Worker and Collective Farm Woman" by Vera Mukhina, the Friendship of Peoples fountain. Unfortunately, some of the VDNKh pavilions have not survived to this day. Photos of them can be seen in the article.

Perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union had a detrimental effect on many areas of life. A new world was being built, where VDNKh turned, in fact, into a market. Many pavilions were sold or leased out as warehouses, most of the unique exhibits have been lost. In fact, only an amusement park operated in the entire complex.

The revival of the complex began in 2013. Retail outlets were demolished and liquidated, all pavilions were emptied and restored, tons of garbage were removed from the territory. Also adjacent to and were included in the complex. It has been restored and accommodating 4.5 thousand spectators. Now it is the main summer venue in Moscow for concerts and various events. And in the summer of 2015, Moskvarium, the largest oceanarium in all of Europe, opened its doors at VDNKh.

    Main pavilions

Initially, there were about 70 different pavilions on the territory of the complex, dedicated to the republics of the USSR, as well as to various areas of Soviet science, industry, medicine, culture, and sports. Soviet guidebooks argued that it would take at least 5 days to inspect the entire VDNKh exhibition. Photos and chronicles of those years allow us to imagine the scope and scale of the exhibition.

Modern VDNKh also begins with the main monumental gate and the first central pavilion, and immediately behind it stretches the Kolkhoz Square, along which 20 pavilions dedicated to different peoples of the former USSR are built. Some of them are being restored, and some of them hold various events, for example, there is an Ice Age Museum and a tasting room for fortified drinks producers from the regions of Russia.

To the right of the Kolkhoz Square is the “Local Dacha” - a special space for a relaxed country holiday in the very heart of the metropolis. There is a chess club, a dance floor, a summer reading room and many other interesting places here.

The central part of the complex is decorated with the Mechanization Square and the Space Pavilion, which is under reconstruction. To the right of it is the wedding palace. It is very popular among newlyweds, because at VDNKh you can sign, get married in a local chapel, arrange a photo walk, and hold a banquet. There is also a summer cinema very close to the palace. Its special advantage is the presence of a roof, so you can enjoy viewing in any weather.

Look for the Green Theater in the western part of the park, and in the eastern part for animal breeding pavilions. So, in the pavilion "Sheep" today there is an equestrian center, where anyone can ride a pony or horse, as well as visit a special excursion.

    Parks and recreation areas

The Ostankino Park and the Botanical Garden, which are adjacent to VDNKh, are excellent places for walks and interesting leisure in nature. There is a boat station in the park where you can rent a boat or catamaran. And the complex "Port at VDNKh" is a huge beach area with pools and bars.

You can also walk along the numerous alleys and parks of the complex, for example, visit the park of theatrical sculptures with white stone figures depicting various theatrical entities. Hikers will also find a pine forest, a linden alley, a birch grove, and near the central entrance there is a “fishing village” where you can relax by the fire, fish and taste beluga or sterlet fish soup cooked by the best chefs.

    Lectures and educational activities

The main place for those wishing to raise their intellectual level and broaden their horizons is a cinema-lecture hall. It hosts regular paid and free lectures on a variety of topics, from psychology and physics to fashion and music history. They also lecture in English.

In the pavilion "Culture" there is a gallery "ROSIZO", where you can get acquainted with Russian fine art. The Transport pavilion houses the Polytechnic Museum, where you can visit a variety of excursions. Many exhibitions are held in other pavilions as well.

    Sports activities

Whether you are in the mood for sports or an active weekend, VDNKh offers many options. For example, the largest rope park in Russia operates near the Physical Culture and Sports pavilion. In addition to the cable car jungle, the complex offers giant swings and an observation deck.

For those wishing to arrange a corporate or friendly tournament in mini-football or basketball, open areas equipped for these sports are rented. Fans of more intimate competitions should go to the “Local Dacha” site, where they can play ping-pong and badminton.

Yoga lovers can work out in the fresh air there, at the dacha, and fitness and strength training fans - at the special Reebok training ground near the Young Technician pavilion.

As many as 5 rental points for various sports equipment operate at VDNKh. This means that you can rent not only a regular bike or roller skates, but also a longboard, fitness bike, scooter and even a tandem bike.

Exhibitions and concerts: cultural program at VDNKh

Moscow received the main concert venue with the reconstruction of the Green Theater. In May, he opened a new theater and concert season, but tickets should be bought in advance. Free concerts are also held, often during the day. Both classical and modern music sounds from the stage, tours of foreign musicians and performances of the best theaters of Russia take place. Charitable and children's events are held.

The unique circular cinema panorama amazed visitors to VDNKh in Soviet times, reviews of modern viewers indicate that the power of engineering amazes them even now. Until now, you can watch 7 unique films here and understand that it was from this that the history of modern cinema began, in which the goal of completely immersing the viewer into the created reality is pursued.

    VDNKh for children

The main entertainment for children is the new, largest oceanarium in Europe. It is not only an aquarium, home to 8000 different marine animals, but also a theater for performances of marine artists. In addition, little ones can touch stingrays, starfish and some fish. Educational programs are also planned.

In the pavilion "Young Naturalist" there is a museum and a theater of fairy tales. There are many exhibits in the museum that introduce children to the Russian authentic and fabulous way of life. Particularly attractive is the fact that all the exhibits can be touched, and the imitation of the hut can be viewed literally up and down, even crawling through the oven with a “burning” fire.

Arriving at VDNKh with children, it is worth stopping by the ceramic manufactory, where guests are introduced to such a kind of applied art as pottery. You can attend one of the master classes and try to make your own clay pot or jug.

Immediately behind the Agriculture pavilion there is an amazing upside-down house, where everything is turned upside down. This exciting attraction can be found in amusement parks around the world.

Lokal dacha also organizes many interesting activities for children, for example, in the summer on the street, and in the winter in the building of the culture house there is a chess club for children and adults. There is also a huge (600 m 2) children's playground with slides, swings and carousels.

If you are driving, find out everything about VDNKh: the address and coordinates for the navigator, as well as the exact coordinates of all parking lots. You can move around the territory by car, but not on all days, it is better to check the details with the administration of the complex.

I have always tried to avoid VDNKh. In my understanding, it was once a beautiful park, but gradually turned into a hopeless Cherkizon. In the list of places for recreation where I would like to go for a walk with my family and friends, the exhibition of the achievements of the national economy was in last place. For more than two years I have not visited VDNKh, and this Friday, on a fine spring day, I went to change my point of view. To say that I was surprised is to say nothing.

The Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy is the largest exhibition, museum and recreational complex in the world. The exhibition complex was officially opened in 1939 as the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSHV) and operated until 1941. Its name has changed several times (VSHV, VPV, VDNKh USSR, VVTs).

Created in Soviet times, the pavilions are a monument of the Soviet era, an example of the dominant architectural views at different times.

The pavilion of the Uzbek SSR, being one of the best-preserved pavilions of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition, is recognized as one of the masterpieces of Soviet architecture of the 1950s by its composition, proportions and elegance. The basis for the creation of the pavilion was taken the main widespread type of the national Uzbek house, in the center of which there is an elegant steel patterned rotunda gazebo, under which a small fountain is still preserved.

    Look what a beauty!

    Central pavilion of VDNKh

The three-tiered composition of the building was created in the traditions of the classic Russian Empire style. Many experts consider the tower of the St. Petersburg Admiralty to be the closest "stylistic relative" of the pavilion.

    Someone destroyed the USSR inscription.

Catering at VDNKh. I am always wary of such establishments, but then I took a chance.

As a result, I drank gorgeous coffee made in a Turk on the sand and ate delicious shawarma. Still alive)

Stylish mobile tents with coffee, corn and hot dogs.

    Beauty and comfort)

The Friendship of Peoples fountain is one of the main symbols of VDNKh. Further text from Wikipedia:

The stepped granite base of the fountain, which in the plan resembles a flower, smoothly turns into an immense bowl-shaped sheaf of ears, sunflowers and hemp. Around it are installed, covered with gold leaf, 16 girls, symbolizing the republics of the USSR until 1956.

Figures of workers and peasants looking to the "bright future".

The area around the fountain and up to the pavilion "Ukraine" in winter is a large skating rink.

The main skating rink of the country - this name was officially given to the skating rink last year by the Russian Book of Records. By the way, today was the last day of the skating rink.

During the preparation of the jubilee exposition dedicated to the 75th anniversary of VDNKh, a high relief by Evgeny Vuchetich "Glory to the Soviet people, the standard bearer of the world!"

It is interesting that this find turned out to be completely accidental - they simply decided to take out the extra stalls from the pavilion and free the walls. This work of art was found behind one of these walls.

The high relief has been hidden from the public for more than 50 years, and recently, in a solemn atmosphere, it was opened by the Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin.

    Pavilion "Republic of Belarus".

And this is the Space Pavilion. It lives up to its name 100%. The pavilion from the side of the square is decorated with a decorated arch, with two pedestals-towers, crowned with sculptures of the Operator and Tractor Operator. Particularly impressive is the grandiose dome made of glass and steel.

I will definitely come back here more than once. VDNKh is now unrecognizable! And after all, I did not have time to see everything.

Many thanks to the VDNKh press service for the warm welcome and to photographer Kirill Smirnov for the excursion)
