Prince Yaroslav built a lot. Under him, the golden domes of the gateway churches shone on the new stone gates of Kiev. Yaroslav erected a city on the Volga, which received his name (Yaroslavl), and also founded the city of Yuryev in the Baltic States (Yaroslav's name at baptism is Yuri), now Tartu. Main temple Ancient Rus- St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev - was founded by Yaroslav in 1037. It was erected by Greek masters, it was huge, had 13 domes, galleries, decorated with rich frescoes and mosaics. People were surprised by a mosaic floor with patterns, a marble altar. Among the magnificent Byzantine mosaics of St. Sophia Cathedral, the famous icon "The Indestructible Wall", or "Oranta" - the praying Mother of God with raised hands, is still preserved in the altar. The devout Yaroslav built churches not only in Kiev, but also in other cities. Under him, new dioceses were established, the first metropolitan, Russian by birth, was elected. His name was Hilarion. He created "The Word about Law and Grace" - one of the first Russian publicistic works. In 1051, Hilarion, on the site of the first settlement of monks in small caves on a wooded mountain slope above the Dnieper, founded the Pechersk Monastery (the future Kiev-Pechersk Lavra). Under Yaroslav, the first written law appeared - "Russian Truth", or "The Most Ancient Truth" - a collection of the first Russian regulations set out on parchment. It takes into account the judicial customs and traditions of Russia - the so-called "Russian law", which guided the prince in the analysis of court cases. With this law, the enlightened prince limited the blood feud, replacing it with a fine (vira). For many centuries Russkaya Pravda became the basis of legislation, laid the foundation of Russian law.

975 years ago (1037) at the Sophia Cathedral in Kiev, Prince Yaroslav the Wise founded the first library of Ancient Rus. This is reported by the "Tale of Bygone Years" - the first annals the beginning of the XII century. The chronicler Nestor wrote: "... Yaroslav, having written many books, put them in the Holy Church, which he himself created and decorated it with gold and silver." The books of the first library were handwritten, with color miniatures.

Book collections arose in Kiev even before Yaroslav. His father, Vladimir Svyatoslavich, according to the chronicler, "loved book words and apparently owned a library ...".

The word "library" itself was almost never used in Ancient Rus. In different cities, the premises for books were called "book keeper", "book depository", "book depository", "book depository", "treasury treasury", "book crate", "book chamber".

For the first time the word "library" is found in the Gennadiy Bible of 1499 - the first complete manuscript set of books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments in the Slavic language in Russia. The term "library" was still unfamiliar to Russians, so in the margin opposite it the translator made an explanation - "book house".

Within the walls of St. Sophia of Kiev, the famous "Word on Law and Grace" by Metropolitan Hilarion was created, the foundations of the first collection of laws of Kievan Rus "Russian Truth" were developed. Books for the library were bought in other countries as well.

During the Tatar-Mongol invasion, traces of the richest book collection, numbering 950 volumes, were lost. According to one of the modern versions, some of the books from the first library are located on the territory of the Transfiguration Monastery in the Mezhyhirya tract (Kiev region). It is assumed that under the foundations of the buildings there are more ancient buildings, in the basements of which old books are kept. Today, the largest library in the world in terms of the number of books is the Russian State Library in Moscow. More than 34 million books are stored on its shelves, the total length of which is more than 350 kilometers. The library funds contain printed works in 247 languages of the peoples of the world, including 80 languages of peoples the former USSR... The library contains handwritten books dating back to the 2nd century. International book exchange is conducted with more than 100 countries around the world.

On January 1, 1860, the Samara Public Library with 800 volumes was opened - now the regional universal scientific Library named after V.I. Lenin. Its opening was facilitated by the appearance a year earlier by order of the governor K. K. Grot of a small office for reading at the editorial office of "Samarskiye provincial vedomosti". Grotto took care of his brainchild for many years and bequeathed his personal collection of books to the public before his death. In the first month, the library signed up "for a year - 14 persons, for six months - 7, for three months - 4, for one month - 25:" Total subscribers - 50 ". Today the library fund contains over 4 million documents. It serves about 50 thousand readers annually.
