    The design engineer is engaged in the development of design schemes.

    Such specialists work in various fields. In the field of engineering communications, the designer is developing communication schemes in homes. He prepares a drawing and coordinates it with the management. If necessary, makes changes to the project. In the field of construction, the designer prepares a full set of drawings for the building structure. There are other areas of activity, such as roads, electrical systems, etc.

    Skills

    The knowledge and skills that a professional design engineer should possess depend on the field of activity of the specialist. But there is a set of general requirements. A competent specialist needs to know:

    • design methods and techniques
    • calculation methods (technical and economic)
    • properties of the materials with which he will work
    • standards and regulations in their industry
    • installation technology

    The qualifications of a design engineer are divided into categories, and for each category, an engineer must possess certain skills and meet certain requirements.

    Duties

    The responsibilities of the design engineer include the development of drawings of individual sections of the project based on the latest achievements in the field of science and technology. He is involved in the preparation of technical specifications for project development, as well as in the collection of data for the design of drawings. The design engineer solves the technical issues associated with the construction objects, "connects" the parts of the design work. He also conducts patent research of projects, evaluates the novelty of the solutions used and the patentability of the project or its part. Ensures compliance of the drawings and the accompanying technical documentation with various regulatory documents and standards of construction and design. Supervises the construction of facilities, consults employees on design issues.

    Participates in the analysis of the development of the project and its implementation, draws up applications for innovations, inventions and discoveries, helps in preparing conclusions on inventions.

    Positive and negative aspects of the profession

    The main advantage of the profession of design engineer is the ability to see and evaluate the result of the work done - a certain system, a constructed building, etc. In most cases, looking back, a specialist sees how hard it was to succeed, and is incredibly proud of his work. Another positive side is that design is an area of \u200b\u200bactivity that is constantly evolving. New systems, equipment, design and construction methods are emerging. Therefore, the representative of this profession needs to constantly learn, master “new horizons”.

    Of course, there are disadvantages to the profession. The main disadvantage is that work on a construction site requires a lot of nervous, and iongda and physical stress. Most likely, it is because of this that most engineers are men. A woman in this profession can also achieve success, but this will be an exception to the rule. Another negative side is the lack of a normalized working day.

    Salary and prospects

    In order to start working as a design engineer, a student or graduate of a university you need to be fluent in a computer, know specialized programs (AutoCad, Compass, etc.), understand the methods of designing and performing calculations, and have the skills to draw up drawings. A young specialist can expect a salary of 15,000 rubles. up to 30,000 rubles., depending on the industry of the enterprise.

    Those who claim a higher income should know GOST, SNiP and other design standards, have a high level of knowledge of specialized design programs (MS Visio, MagiCad, etc.), carefully study the scope of the employer. In addition, they should have the skills to prepare design documentation and technical specifications, be able to "read" the drawing. Work experience is required from 1 year to 3 years, always in the specialty.

    Some companies require technical English as well as certificates.

    A specialist who meets all the requirements of an employer can expect a salary of 30,000 rubles or more. up to 60,000 rub.

    There are so-called "design aces." They have experience from 3 to 5 years, experience as a leader, know the technical english language  and have the skill to develop design decisions. The salary of such specialists is from 50,000 rubles. up to 100000 rub.

    Where to learn

    You can study for the position of design engineer in one of the construction or technical universities of the country, depending on the specialization and field of activity. For example, the designer of heating systems must have a diploma in education in the specialty "Heat and Gas Supply and Ventilation".

    And the building designer should graduate from the university with a degree in Industrial and Civil Engineering.

    Half the kingdom for the project!

    One of the construction professions that most ordinary people know little about is the profession of a building design engineer. We can evaluate the work of the architect and his project, we can see how well (or poorly) the builders worked. But here the work of the building designer for the most part is hidden from our eyes.

    “Well, what does he do? - you ask. “Designs the dimensions of the room?” Not only. This is painstaking and delicate work, on which depends how much the building will be convenient, reliable and durable.

    What does a design engineer do?

    According to the Unified Tariff and Qualification Handbook of Works and Professions of Workers (ETKS, section “Positions of senior and engineering and technical workers of design, engineering, technological and survey organizations”, position of design engineer, section “ job responsibilities"), design engineer:

    • Develops separate sections (parts) of the project;
    • takes part in the preparation of tasks for the development of design solutions;
    • participates in the collection of initial data for design, in solving technical issues on fixed facilities throughout the entire period of design, construction, commissioning of the facility and development of design capacities;
    • links the adopted design decisions with design decisions in other sections (parts) of the project;
    • conducts patent research in order to ensure patent cleanliness of new design solutions and patentability;
    • ensures compliance of the developed projects and technical documentation with standards, technical specifications and other regulatory documents for design and construction, as well as the task for their development;
    • carries out architectural supervision of the construction of projected facilities, advises on issues within his competence;
    • participates in the analysis and generalization of experience in developing projects and their implementation in construction and, on this basis, prepares proposals on the feasibility of adjusting the adopted general and fundamental design decisions;
    • takes part in the preparation of applications for inventions, the preparation of conclusions and reviews on rationalization proposals and inventions, draft standards, specifications and other regulatory documents, in seminars and conferences.

    As told Tatyana SHUMILOVA, consultant in the selection of personnel in the direction of "Construction" of the international recruitment agency Kelly services Today, employers want to see the following as a potential design engineer:

    • higher technical education (design, architecture);
    • experience in designing buildings or individual systems (depends on where and on which site he gets a job);
    • experience in project calculations (sections of the project);
    • experience in maintaining and controlling project documentation;
    • possession of AutoCad, ArchiCad (at least reading drawings).

    In addition, it is often necessary for specialists in this field to be proficient in at least one foreign language.

    Education

    Building design engineers are trained at universities such as Moscow State University of Railway Engineering (MIIT, Institute of Railways, Construction and Structures), Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University, Faculty of Engineering, specialty "Design and Construction of Industrial and Civil Structures") and several other Moscow and regional universities.

    Well, and, of course, one cannot fail to say about the Moscow State university of Civil Engineering (MGSU), which we dwell on in more detail. It turned out to be not so easy to understand which faculties train designers at MGSU. But after a little investigation, it was still possible to do this.

    So, the faculty of industrial and civil construction (ASG) MGSU trains engineers in the specialty "ASG" with a specialization in "Research and design of buildings and structures." In addition, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture has a separate specialty "Building Design". The deputy deans of these faculties spoke about the features of training in these areas.

    Alexander TOPILIN, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Industrial and Civil Engineering (ASG) MGSU:

    “According to applications filed in the summer of 2009 from those wishing to enter the specialty“ ASG ”with a specialization in“ Research and Design of Buildings and Structures ”, the competition was about three people per place. However, due to the fact that applicants were allowed to submit documents in several educational institutions, and the number of applications was greater than in previous years, this artificially spurred the growth of the passing ball. And then part of the applicants took them and went to those universities where the passing score was lower and as a result, the passing score was quite low (about 105 points in three subjects - physics, mathematics and the Russian language).

    The main subjects that are emphasized in training are structural mechanics and sopromat, which are based on physics and mathematics. Starting from the third or fourth year, some full-time students begin to work, although we do not encourage this, but on the contrary, try not to, because educational process  work often gets in the way.

    In pre-crisis times, when there was a very high demand for our graduates (higher than the number of specialists graduated), we entered into agreements with organizations. According to these agreements, we undertook to select a graduate according to the requirements of the company (for example, with a driver’s license, consent to go on business trips or knowledge of one or another language, etc.), and for this we received remuneration from the company. That is, in fact, here we played the role of a recruitment agency.

    For example, we have a corporate education system. it additional educationthat our students receive at the university. One of the customers and, accordingly, the sponsors of this project since 2004 is the SU-155 group of companies (one of the largest Russian construction organizations). Under this agreement, we are conducting additional training for students who, after graduation, will be able to go to work for this enterprise.

    During supplementary program  students go through what is not paid enough attention to in the main program of their education. For example, how to prepare documentation for the opening of a construction object, how to work with inspection organizations, how to hand over the object, teach budgeting, etc. Lectures on these topics are given by both our teachers and the heads of the SU-155 divisions.

    Tatyana SARVUT, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (IAF) MGSU:

    “The specialists we graduate are assigned the specialty of“ engineer-architect ”. Graduates of this direction of our faculty feel very confident both in design and in artistic matters, as well as in matters of constructions (their engineering).

    Demand for this specialty has always been and remains stably high. For example, last year (2009), about 300 applications were submitted from those wishing to enter the IAF specialty “Building Design”. Wherein budget places  we have only 25. Another 50 people are accepted on a contract basis. We have no evening or correspondence departments, since it is simply impossible to receive such an education in this mode.

    In order to enter this direction, in addition to the exam, our applicants also pass two creative exams: drawing and architectural graphics. In the preparation process, we focus equally on both the engineering and artistic components of training. The main subject is architectural design.

    After graduation, graduates of our faculty go to work in leading design institutes in Moscow, such as Mosproject OJSC, TsNIIEP dwellings (Central Research and Design Institute of Residential and Public Buildings), MNIITEP (Moscow Research and Design Institute of Typology and Experimental Design ), Institute. Mezentseva and others, as well as in private architectural workshops. "

    Forecasts

    According to Tatyana Shumilova, due to the financial crisis, the construction market “dipped” by at least 60%. Since there are very few new facilities now, the design has suffered very noticeably (for example, in January 2009, the largest design bureau in the world, Eric van Egeraat, went bankrupt). Maria SAZONOVA, consultant ANKOR Real Estate and Construction» , noted that changes in the personnel market affected designers, primarily in relation to the level of salaries. As in the market as a whole, there is a decrease in salary by 25-30% in relation to the 2008 offers.

    However, now, compared with 2009, a slight increase is observed in the construction industry. Specialists and experts in this market segment assess the situation quite positively. The main difficulty lies in financing facilities, whose insufficient volumes hinder the recovery of this important sector of the economy.

    Profession in numbers

    Tuition fees at MGSU:

    At the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (full-time) - 112,000 rubles per year; evening and correspondence courses are absent.
    - at the faculty of industrial and civil engineering:
    full-time - 95,000 rubles per year;
    evening uniform - 66 000 rubles per year;
    correspondence form - 58 000 rubles per year.
    The cost of training increases annually by 5-10%.

    Salary:

    According to Kelly Services, the monthly payment of design engineers ranges from 60 to 90 thousand rubles in the presence of English.

    But according to ANCOR Real Estate and Construction, these figures are somewhat more modest. According to the data presented, a design engineer with experience from a year to three today earns from 40 to 60 thousand rubles a month. The chief engineer of the project with experience of at least four years - from 70 to 100 thousand rubles, and the head of the design department with experience of more than 6 years - from 120 to 150 thousand rubles.

    The position of a designer has been considered incredibly important and prestigious for hundreds of years. What exactly does a designer do, what are his rights and obligations? This will be discussed later.

    Who is the designer?

    What can you tell about the profession presented? A designer is a specialist who develops special plans and schemes. The peculiarity of the specialty under consideration is that workers in the field of building projects can work in almost any course. Of course, everything will depend on who the designer studied for: a worker in the field of construction, aviation, mechanical engineering, etc. It’s worth it, however, it should be noted that the general functions and responsibilities of the workers in question are not much different. What exactly is typical for such a specialist as a designer? This, of course, is the main goal - the development of custom-made various kinds of drawings, diagrams, plans, etc.

    Thus, the profession presented is considered incredibly important and necessary in society. Skillful engineers capable of competently performing their job functions were always needed. And what about the skills, knowledge and responsibilities necessary for the work of the designer? About it further.

    Knowledge and skills required for work

    As mentioned above, it is considered very complex, but at the same time very important and prestigious.

    What skills, knowledge and abilities should the considered specialist in order to competently and effectively carry out his work activities? These include such important qualities and character traits as punctuality, high efficiency, attentiveness, creative thinking and much more. It is worth paying attention to the skills necessary for work. So, it is worth highlighting:

    About duties

    It should be noted right away: the designer is a specialist who is mainly engaged in mental work. The duties of the employee include the development, discussion, verification and implementation of various kinds of projects.

    The specialist is obliged to participate in meetings and conferences, create presentations of his own work, communicate with colleagues, etc. Thus, the designer is an intellectual profession, with an almost complete absence of physical labor. And what does the duties of a specialist prescribe job description? Here are some highlights:

    • accurate sketching of projects in accordance with all necessary standards and norms;
    • work with documentation: its design, certification and transfer to management;
    • presentation of own projects and verification of others (depending on skill level).

    Education required for work

    It’s not so difficult to get the profession of designer, if you make all the proper efforts. First, you need to finish all 11 classes of the school and get good grades in such subjects as Russian, mathematics and physics (some universities also require grades in chemistry and foreign languages).

    Secondly, it is necessary to submit documents for admission to the appropriate higher educational institution. Universities that are ready to teach citizens the profession of a designer include technical and special engineering educational institutions. In particular, the following main specialties can be distinguished:

    • ventilation and heat supply;
    • electric networks and systems, etc.

    It is worth noting that the best option would be to call university reception  with a question about whether there are faculties or departments at the university that are ready to train a person in the specialty "designer". The profession, description of the presented specialty and information about it will be provided by the relevant educational institution.

    On the demand for the profession

    What do people know about such a profession as a designer? Who is the designer in the representation of the majority of the population, what does he do? It is worth answering all these questions. Design engineer is a very famous and widespread profession.

    Probably, each person will have a friend whose profession is identical to the one under consideration. The thing is that in almost any production or construction organization, a specialist is needed. This means that the profession is very popular and necessary in society.

    Thus, the profession of designer is considered quite common in the labor market. Due to the high demand among employers, getting a job today will not be so difficult. And what about the career of such an employee?

    About career

    As mentioned above, the profession in question is quite common and in demand in society. And what are the chances of an ordinary employee for advanced training or rank?

    Everything is pretty simple here. Specialists with the desire and ability to improve themselves, to strengthen existing knowledge, will have much greater opportunities for career advancement than other employees.

    There is an opportunity to get the position of lead designer or Timely advanced training will help to master new positions in the near future.
