    English alphabet syllables pronunciation. Closed syllable

    A vowel should be read according to certain rules depending on the type of stressed syllable. In order to properly divide a word into syllables and establish which group they belong to, it is necessary to remember two rules of slaughter (we are now talking about polysyllabic words with two or more vowels). Pay attention to the letter that goes behind the stressed vowel. If this is a consonant (but not r), give it to the next one, unstressed syllable. For example: stu / dent. If two or more consonants follow (and even two rr in a row), leave the first letter to the stressed syllable, and give the second letter to the next, unstressed one. For example: im / pu / dent. But this moment does not apply to sonants. If one of the two consonants is a sonant (he himself acts as a syllable-forming sound), then the second consonant will also be attracted to him. For example: ta / ble.

    Syllables in english language  divided into four types.

    1) The first is open syllable  - is a syllable that ends in a vowel. The vowel in this type of syllable in English needs to be read for a long time, that is, as it is presented in the alphabet of the English language. This type of syllable in English also includes words with dumb e at the end of a word. It is a conditional indicator that the syllable in this word is open.

    Steve, note face, tie, tube, type

    2) The second type of syllables in the English language is considered closed syllable. It ends in one or more consonants (except r). In this case, the vowel sound in stressed syllable  read briefly.

    hen, on, tap, nut, hit

    3) The third type of syllables in the English language is to distinguish a syllable in which the stressed vowel is “pursued” by the letter r. She herself can not be read, but demonstrates that the vowel sound will be long.

    thirst, pork, sort

    4) And finally, the fourth type is a syllable that looks like an open syllable with dumb e, only between it and the stressed vowel is not any consonant, but the letter r.

    dare, mere, cure, core

    In almost any English textbook you will meet such words. What syllables are is more or less clear. And why are they open and closed? And why does it even need to know?

    Open   syllables end in a vowel (for example, ma-ma). Closed , respectively, on the consonant (for example, port-fele). To read the Russian language no matter what type of syllable. But in English it will depend on this how to read the word correctly.

    So here. Shock vowel at open syllable  is read   same, what is the name of   in the alphabet ( attention: not any vowel, but only a shock!). In addition to the letter Yy (wye)which is read simply (ah).

    Aa

    Oo

    Ee

    Uu

    Ii

    Yy

    it happens three variants of open syllable:

    1) With RSG - the shock vowel is separated from the next vowel in a word with only one consonant. It does not matter if there are any further consonants further. For example:

    i = ah l ike - [l aIk] ( like - like)

    a = hey k ate [k eIt] (Kate)

    u = y p upil [p jupl] (puppl - student)

    By the way:   letter Her (AND)  at the end of the word is not readable, if there are other vowels besides her.

    2) With R  - the only vowel at the end of a word. For example:

    i = ah i  [h aI ] (hi - hi)

    e = and: h e  [h J ] (hee - he)

    y = ah m y  [m aI ] (May is mine)

    3) With RG - two vowels are next. Then the first (shock) vowel is in the open syllable, and the second is not read at all. for example:

    o = oh c oat ( kout - coat)

    e = and: s ee [s J ] (si - see)

    a = hey p aint ( paint - paint)

    AT closed  syllable (that is, one that ends with a consonant — one (and immediately after it there is no vowel) or several at once)vowels are read like this :

    Aa

    [x] (e)

    Oo

    [O] (o)

    Ee

    [e] (e)

    Uu

    [A] (a)

    Ii

    [I] (i)

    Yy

    [I] (i)

    That is, each letter has its own sound, except for letters Ii -Ayi   Yy -Wye which read the same  - (and).

    For example:

    Aa

    (hat) - hat

    (fan)  - fan

    The mouth opens wide, the sound is “big”

    Ee

    (red) -red

    (ten) - ten

    The mouth opens a little, the sound is pronounced on a half smile.

    Consonants do not relent!

    Ii

    (pig) - pig

    (sit) - sit

    Oo

    stop

    (dog) - dog

    (stop) - stop

    Uu

    (wounds) - run

    (cat) - cut

    Yy

    system

    symbol

    (systems) - system

    (symbol) - symbol

    What is the result?

    1. 1) Syllables are open  (end with a vowel or immediately after them comes a vowel) and closed  (end with a consonant).

    2. 2) In open  syllable shock vowel read like this what is it called  in the alphabet. AT closed  syllable vowels denote briefsounds.

    Letter

    Called

    Read

    in an open syllable

    in a closed syllable

    Hey

    hey

    uh (wide)

    and

    e (narrow)

    Ai

    ah

    and

    OU

    oU

    about

    yu

    but

    Wye

    ah

    and

    3. 3) Letters IiAy and Yy-Wai read equally: in the open syllable - (ah), in the closed - (and).

      :) If it is not clearer - please ask questions!

    Before we begin to understand what an open and closed syllable is, I would like to immediately warn you - in English, reading rules have so many exceptions that it is better to just remember reading as many words as possible, and read the rest by analogy.

    But the school teaches the rules and makes the grades ... In order to apply the rules correctly, let's start with the syllables.

    In English, as well as in Russian, words are divided into syllables. Very often, in order to correctly read a vowel letter in a syllable, it is necessary to determine the type of syllable - open or closed syllable.

    Take the usual russian word « book"Divide it into syllables:   BOOK. Both syllables end in a vowel sound, so both syllables OPEN.

    Take the word " trap", Divided into syllables: TRAP. In this example, both syllables end in a consonant, so both CLOSED.

    But determine the syllable english syllable  not as easy as in Russian. A typical English word contains 2, maximum 3 syllables, so the syllable is not difficult to find.

    If you take the floor name  , you might think that there are 2 syllables in it, but we all know that it is being read, that is, the syllable is one. We will understand in more detail why everything is just like that.

    Open syllable
      1. If there is no consonant in the syllable after the vowel.
      For example: go, no, ago, my, hi, be, me.
      2. If after the vowel immediately stands "e" at the end of the word
      For example:   pie, lie, toe, blue, bye, dye.
      3. If there is a consonant letter, but immediately followed by the “dumb” vowel letter “e”, which is not readable.
      For example: name, blade, take, these, mine, time, type.
      3. After the shock vowel - consonant + le
      For example: table, noble.

    Remember !!!  In the open syllable vowels are read sameas they are called in.

    Closed syllable
      If the syllable after the vowel is one or more consonant letters (except the letter r).
      For example: bad, cat, vet, strip, stop, camp, battle, end, center, pink.

    But in English "cunning" vowels and consonants. They can be read differently depending on how they are located in the word.
