John Hank. John Hank from NianticLabs @ Google about geolocation services, Ingress, Field Trip and wearable computers. Under the Senya Google

About John Hank (John Hanke) You can write a lot, but more eloquent will be the fact that this man stood at the origins of the project "Google Earth". Having finished working on it, he did not want to rest on the laurels, and created inside the Google startup Niantic Labs, which became known not only in the world, but also in Ukraine thanks to the game ingress. We have already written several times, it is the game augmented reality for Android users, in which two factions are fighting for domination over portals, real objects in the world's surrounding players. Another, less well-known Niantic Labs project is called Field Trip, and is an appropriate reality application for smartphones and Google Glass, which is designed to become a virtual guide for travelers. At the moment, both of these developments are at the beginning of its path, and may well be that in the future they will become no less popular than "Google Earth". With John Hank, we managed to talk about his work, wearable computers, the future of geolocation services, and, of course, about Ingress and Field Trip.

Have you developed a product that today is the basis of "Google Earth", how did the idea of \u200b\u200bits creation come to you and how difficult it was to implement this project?

"Google Earth" evolved from the technologies that were used in those days of Silicon Graphics (SGI), it was sophisticated graphics With a high requirement for hardware. They have done a certain work on imaging images. We were inspired by this, and wanted to build a whole digital world to fill it with information. The idea itself came from science fiction, there is the author of Neil Stevenson, he wrote a book of "Avalanche", which was very popular 10 years ago. The book described in the book also inspired us to create the Earth, so I would notice his contribution to our work. How hard to implement this project? Very and very hard. We created it in parts. Starting with small pieces, we developed a project in software and information. But before we entered the Google, we did not have access to data in full, and only after that we were able to significantly expand the server part of the product. We also got much more resources in order to get the global information you see in the "Google Earth" today. After all, when we started our work, the "Google Earth" coverage was quite limited, this is today you can explore the whole world, but it was not always.

Do you think today "Google Earth" and "Google Maps" are developing in the right direction?

I can only answer yes 🙂 and seriously, these are excellent products that continue to evolve, they become more detailed, complete, as well as interactive. I like the fact that "Google Maps" and "Google Earth" effectively merged into one experience of interaction for users. And it happened due to the evolution of such web technologies as a WebGL with which we can get 3D graphics right in the browser.

From the point of view of the head of the experimental laboratory Google, what trends can you today note in mobile geolocation applications?

In my opinion, the goal of "Google Earth" and "Google Maps" was the creation of a foundation, on the basis of which a new wave of companies with geolocation products could appear. For me, the most interesting are background geors for smartphones, which can provide information about your environment, more or less automatically. This is what we do in the Field Trip project for smartphones and Google Glass. It seems to me that it is an evolution from ordinary cards to information, automatic services that teach the user about what is around, about history, architecture, art, and of course about such establishments as restaurants and bars.

What geolocation applications do you use?

Field Trip and Ingress are certainly located at the first places of my list, also I use "Google Maps" and Google Sky. Previously, I used Foursquare, but a lot of time passed from the moment I launched it for the last time. In addition, I think, you can enter this Uber list, which also uses geolocation.

And how often do you play ingress?

    Several times a day.

Google's services and applications are already actively using geolocation, as you think it can be used in all programs? For example, in Gmail, if I do not want mail to come to me on a smartphone when I am at home after eight in the evening.

Yes, the developers experimented with systems of this kind, which include and turn off certain services, depending on where you are, at home or at work. I think this is a very young area, there is still a lot of things that you need to do for it. With Field Trip, for example, we are trying to provide the user with information not only about his environment, but also about things as applications that can be useful to the user in a specific place.

And what is the main purpose of developing Field Trip?

If we talk in general, the goal of Field Trip is to help people find the previously unknown information about the places where they live. I do not know how good the Field Trip coverage in Ukraine, but one of the features of the program on which we focused is a study of history. People can recognize interesting information about the history of those places where they live, even if it is a small village or city. The main goal of Field Trip is to increase the appreciation of people to those places where they live and by which they travel to help them go beyond the focus of well-known facts and see things that are hard to detect. It may be an interesting story, architecture or art. We strive to be not just another guide on bars and restaurants, but to provide people with information that only local residents can know. With Field Trip, we invest a lot to find bloggers in different cities that are very passionate about the places where they live. At this stage of product development, we managed to attract more than 150 such people, and even the same as much as we communicate with us. We want to transfer their stories in Field Trip to travel, you had a feeling as if you know some local resident who gave you interesting local information that no one else knows.

That is, you get information for Field Trip exclusively from living people, and not from services such as Wikipedia?

The information enters the Field Trip from publishers, and each piece of this data has a binding to a specific place. We also created a plugin for WordPress, which allows bloggers easier to transfer us entries with geolocation. In some cases, we cooperate with the publishers of historical books that scan and provide geolocation data to become part of Field Trip. Therefore, yes, we do not use Wikipedia.

With the distribution of applications and services that use geolocation, the question arises as a user can protect its privacy?

Why in Ingress only 8 levels of development of players?

There will be more. How many levels are now in Ward of Warcraft? 84 or more? We did not want to create a purely numerical system of increasing, as it was considered that the players will bother with time. We will have additional levels in the game, but in order to achieve them, you will need to go through special tasks and mission. It will take us some time, but we are accurately implemented. In the meantime, many groups of players in different countries began to "reward" players by the 9th, 10th and 11th levels. It is not built on net user achievements, but on solving specific tasks that local clubs create. As for me, it is very cool that local Ingress communities assume the task of creating these higher levels, they decide, reached their player or not.

    How many users have Ingress?

The number we can call is more than one million application downloads, and active players constitute a significant part of this number.

Do you have plans to release ingress on other platforms? After all, now the game is available only for Android.

Yes, we plan to release a version for iOS, and it will become available next year. And I am interested in doing something for wearable computers, but we are waiting for the possibilities of hardware to be equal to what we imagine.

In your opinion, Google Glass and supplemented reality applications can change the world?

I think they can change the world. The Internet and mobile devices did an excellent job, connecting us with the whole world, people and knowledge while we are in motion. But they do not cope in order to provide us with an excellent experience of interaction with the real world, to make interactive those things that we see, and to which they touch. Using public transport, going to the museum or buying something in the store - these are areas in which mobile technologies, as well as interfaces, are not in their place. And the smartphone form factor, in my opinion, is not ideal for providing information in all cases. Imagine that you decide to visit the exhibition in the museum. You can take your phone and get information from it. Nevertheless, I think that Google Glass or something passive that does not require keeping the device in hand, and will not distract you, will allow you to freely communicate with people and will be much better solution. Therefore, I think that the potential of wearable computers and augmented reality is huge, and such devices like Google Glass will provide people with the same information as on the smartphone, but without isolation from people around. After all, the fact that a person gets his phone and ceases to pay attention to what is happening around is a big problem. And the completed reality should get rid of it from it. We still have to make technology and form factor correctly, but the promise of what you can receive the necessary information does not fall out of your surroundings, it is worth the effort.

What is the next step in the development of geolocation services?

There are many developments, but I think that wearable computers and augmented reality will be able to open a lot of new features for geolocation services. You still need a lot to make more accurate location, as well as to improve batteries. After all, if the position of the user inside buildings can be determined up to a meter, it will open the path for geolocation services that still do not exist today. And many works are now underway to make positioning technologies more energy efficient. Google invests a lot in these areas and will continue to improve them.

John Hank - a man who made the whole world to catch Pokemon

Creator Pokemon Go John Hank / Toru Hanai.

From July 6, when the game Pokemon Go has become available in the USA, Australia and New Zealand, the capitalization of the Japanese manufacturer of the Nintendo video game has grown more than twice. But it should be noted that Nintendo did not participate in the creation of Pokemon GO and does not own the rights to the game, writes ft. The company has only a third in Pokemon Company, which owns the rights to the Pokemon brand, and as much in the Niantic - American startup, which has developed the game. Nintendo itself is engaged in consoles, and for a breakthrough to the world of games for smartphones uses partners. For example, the Japanese Dena is now developing five games for it.

Pokemon Go - the brainchild of American John Hank. It is called the founder of the MMORPG genre (massive multiplayer role-playing online game), thanks to him arose Google Earth and Google Maps, and now the world is crazy due to Pokemon.

    Start

Hank was born in the town of Cross Plains, lost among the cotton fields of Texas. All population is about 1000 people. Known town what the writer Robert Howard grew up there. Come to work in Google, Hanke hung over his table poster with the most famous character Howard - Conan Barbar.

Khanka's programming mastered himself in the younger high School (6-8th grades). After graduating from 1989, the University of Texas in Austin, Hanke settled in the State Department and managed to work in Washington and Myanmar (Burma). The turning point in his fate was the decision to enter a business school them. Walter Haas at the University of California. He graduated from school in 1996, but in 1994 he and his fellow students on MBA Steve Sellers founded in the university business incubator Startup Archetype Interactive and started doing an Internet game. In history, it entered the name Meridian 59 and is considered the first MMORPG, in which people could play through the Internet, and not a private network. It is essential because at that time providers used online games to fight for customers. For example, access to Neverwinter Nights opened only when the modem is connected to the AOL network.

    Opening of land

The test version of Meridian 59 was posted on the network in December 1995. The game used three-dimensional graphics - just like modern role-playing games. The prehistory said the empire in which portals extended to colonize other worlds. Then the state was broke up on the metropolitan and colonies, chaos came, the war began for power, Monsters appeared - in general, the players had something to do.

The game turned out to be popular and already in June 1996. 3Do was sold. Khanka worked in the project for two more years, and in 1998 he started a new owned project, simpler. Big Network startup was engaged in creating checkers and other casual games - i.e. games with simple rules For a wide range of users.

A year later, Khanka sold him and refused to create games. At that time, he met the team of programmers who decided to make their own game and founded Intrinsic Graphics startup. Formerly, these guys worked at Silicon Graphics, software and iron developer for computer graphics. The equipment of this company was made, for example, "Forrest Gump" and "Jurassic Park". They proudly showed Hanke to their development, allowing to play schedule with excellent quality on the usual computer. On the demarolec, the camera looked from the space to the ground, and then drove to the surface, allowing you to consider individual streets, tells in the book of Jerome Edgela "World Innovation Clusters".

Khanka was amazed. But by no means what start-ups were calculated. At that time, the space shots of the surface of our planet were just started to enter open sale. Khanka tried to convince them and their investors to forget about the development of a new game and make a cartography, but unsuccessfully. Then he redeemed the technology that makes up an increase in scale hired programmers - the startup Keyhole originated. Was January 2000, the dotcom companies proper a cloudless future, and Khanka easily received funding from Sony. "Our goal is simple - to provide the whole world to our customers," he wrote in a press release of 2001. Three-dimensional images appeared in the maps of his program. But not all sections of the Earth, but only those on which satellite shots and aerial photography managed to redeem. The picture was tied to geographical coordinates, it indicated various data: the boundaries of areas and states, addresses and telephones of local firms, etc.

The project is actively growing - but then the bubble of the dotcomka burst. Survival question arose. On helped war in Iraq. Even before they began to fall bombs, financing was pissed in Keyhole, wrote the newspaper The Mercury News. The money was given by the developer of graphic accelerators and NVIDIA processors and the In-Q-Tel venture fund, which can be used in the development, which can be used by intelligence services. Hank cards turned out to be interesting not only to the CIA. Earth viewer was happy to use CNN, ABC, CBS and other TV channels to illustrate the plots about the war in the bay.

Telekartinka attracted the attention of investors. In 2004, Keyhole was ready to close the round of financing V. But a few days before that, Khanka called from Google. At that time, the brainchild Sergei Brin and Larry Page was a noticeable company, but not so monster as now. Google did not seek to disclose his financial opportunities, has not yet spent a loud IPO, did not capture the software market for smartphones. The manager from the business development division of Google asked Khanka to arrange a presentation, especially since their offices were located nearby. Less than 24 hours after the meeting, Keyhole received an offer to sell from Google for $ 35 million and canceled the round of financing.

    Under the Senya Google

Google's resources played a crucial role for project development. In 2002, the annual subscription to the Earth Viewer cost $ 1200. As soon as the need disappeared in money, the price was reduced to $ 30, and when in June 2005 the project came out under the name of Google Earth, he was free. In the book "World Innovation Clusters", such an example is given: Khanka asked Bryn permission to acquire some of the satellite shots issued for sale. Brin ordered to buy everything that will come.

Google Hank held the position of Vice President for the Development of the GEO Division. He developed one interesting project by other: Google Earth, Google Maps, Local, Street View, Sketchup (a program for simulating simple three-dimensional objects purchased by Google in 2006), Panoramio (photoservice with snapshots to geographic coordinates). Under the start of Hank was not one hundred employees, but there was no former freedom. In 2010, he decided to quit everything and again to do his own business. But Google did not want to let go of a valuable worker. The parties agreed that Khanka would launch his startup inside Google.

The new project was dubbed Niantic Labs (see COP). The first project was the Mobile Application Field Trip. It monitors where the user goes, and tells him interesting events from the history that happened on this street advises to make a hook and take a look at one or another landmark - and then go to a restaurant or shop.

The next definition of Niantic has become the game of Ingress, built on the principle of augmented reality. You turn on the camcorder on the gadget and see the image on the screen. But the program draws fictional objects to real landscapes and subjects.

"I have a feeling that we are present in the emergence of a new genre<...> As in the case of Flight Simulator and Doom, "the Independent Hanke quotes. Ingress has become not the first game with augmented reality, but also Flight Simulator and Doom were also not pioneers, but largely laid the laws of the genre.

In Ingress, there are two fractions - "enlightened" and "resistance". The first help some mysterious mind - shapers - to penetrate our world. Allegedly they bring with them a new era of the enlightenment. Resistance believes that the purpose of the sheppers is to enslave people. Both fractions are struggling, capturing portals. The difference from ordinary computer games is that portals are real objects. As a rule, cultural - from historical monuments to graffiti on the wall.

The biggest problem of the game was to encourage the player to reach the first portal. "Many have downloaded the game, not understanding that it needs to be achieved in different places. [People asked] Where are the control buttons? How to make the character move? " - told Hank The Independent. Then they came to them, which you have to include GPS and move yourself to your character to start moving. True, it was not without scaling. Programs have been written to the game incorrect GPS coordinates. With their help, you could travel around the city, without leaving the apartment, like on Google Earth. But if the deception has revealed, lazy Banili.

Reaching to the place, the player looked through the smartphone camera, and the program was drawing to the image of the portal image. Then the player did in the smartphone mark about his capture. Capture rules differed, sometimes it was necessary to unite into groups.

The Pocket Gamer resource assures that one advanced gamer Ingress overcame, playing, in the real world of 100,000 miles (about 161,000 km). There was a case when the gamera hired a private plane so that he could get to the remote portal and tie it with the portal in his hometown - his comrades on the game were thrown on the flight ("even I was amazed," - Hanke). Khanka shared stories when they climbed the mountain to get to the portal, and also got acquainted and married thanks to the game. As with Pokemon Go, it was one of the goals: pull out people because of home computers to the streets and push to communicate in the real world.

Ingress was launched in beta versions in November 2012. In early 2013, Khanka realized that the players appoint divertialization - they were going together in the real world. They had an idea to make these meetings part of the game, writes The Independent. In February 2013, such a collection, issued as a mission in the game, was appointed on the territory of the historic monument Kahokya - groups of 109 Kurgans of North American Indians in Illinois. As it came out, the day was cold and rainy, and from the city to Kurgan was not very close. The creators of the game decided that the meeting failed. What was their surprise when about 60 people spent almost all day, running between the mounds and playing in the Ingress. Over time, such events began to collect thousands of crowds not only in the United States, but also in Japan and Spain.

Ingrus players allowed to offer places for the portals themselves. The main criterion - it was supposed to be a crowded, remarkable or beautiful place. Hanke did not take into account one - only in the first two years the game was downloaded 8 million times. So his team received about 15 million applications for the portals. "We approved about 5 million of them around the world," Mashable media portal told Hank. Last year, 41 people worked in Niantic, they did not physically cope with the flow of proposals and removed the opportunity to make an application from the game. But the portal network and the player movement statistics played an extremely important role in another project - the following game was built on the basis of this information, Pokemon Go.

    Pokemon are coming

Pokemon Go game arose due to a joke. In 2014, the fool's day on April 1, Google and Pokemon Company were united, picked up in different places on the mobile version of Google Maps Pokemon and offered users to find them. The success of the action forced Khanka to think. Pokemon 'rights belong to The Pokemon Company - a joint venture, which in equal shares own the developer of games with the Pokemones of Game Freak, a manufacturer of Creatures and Nintendo toys. Khanka went to negotiate with the Director General of The Pokemon Company Cuncen Isharya about a new game with his animals and augmented reality, and suddenly it turned out that Isichari and his wife passionate players in Ingress. Their heroes are more pumped than the character of Khanka himself. It greatly facilitated negotiations.

Why Khanka called his startup Niantic Labs

Hanke chose a name for a startup, which would show that there is a lot of interesting things around us, tells the Mercury News. Niantic is the name of the whaling schooner, lowered water in 1832. In 1849 she was not lucky enough to sail to California in the midst of gold fever. Almost the whole team escaped from the ship to Golden Priis. Found new sailors, so the ship pulled out to the land and redesigned to the hotel. Then it was a common practice. The hotel was burning several times, then he was rejected again, the cultural layer increased - and over time the ship literally enveloped into the street. His remains stumbled upon in 1978. When digging, close to the 260-meter skyscraper Transemerika in San Francisco.

In 2015, another event important for the developer occurred. Google has conceived reorganization of his business in Alphabet Holding, which ended in October last year. Various directions were highlighted in separate companies. Before Google developed its services like Google Maps as a horizontal, low-level platform, complained by Khanka Business Insider. In other words, Niantic had no right to cooperate with other developers if Google was developed in their joint product. Now he gained freedom.

In November 2015, Niantic held a round of financing series A, receiving $ 20 million from Pokemon Company Group, Google and Nintendo. "We did not go far from the nest. We are only five minutes away, - said Hanka resource VentureBeat. - But it is very important for us that we are outside the ship-google ship. This is our universe. "

In February of this year, Niantic received another $ 5 million investment from the Venture Foundation of the Fuji Television Corporation and the Alsop Louie Foundation. Not only money, but also knowledge was important. Japanese telecorporation disassembled in Asian marketing. And the founder of Alsop Louie Louis Gilman is a branding specialist explained Hank in Niantic blog. With Hilman, he is not familiar with the first-head - he was the co-founder and the first general director of the In-Q-Tel Foundation, which invested in Keyhole.

But the work with Gilman prepared rich soil for supporters of the theory of conspiracy. In-Q-Tel works on the CIA, they grumble. Thanks to Google Maps, American intelligence filmed our streets, but could not look inside the buildings. This task was solved by the game like Ingress and Pokemon GO. Now it is enough to send to the desired room of a rare Pokemon - and is ready online broadcast.

    Three tasks of Pokemon

In addition to the commercial game Pokemon Go there are three important tasks, Writes Business Insider.

The first is physical training. A variety of fitness applications leave the aftertaste, as if you were an athlete, which was at the Olympics, Irrigate Hank. Pokemon Go does not insist that you have to run so many kilometers or burn so much calories, otherwise you will lose. On the contrary, the game offers a delicious prize, Pokemon, if they still get together with the forces. The game has such a quest: find the egg and go with it a certain distance. Then Pokémon gets out of it.

The second is to look at the world with a new look. Many points in the game are tied to historical or simply beautiful places, thus even a native city can be discovered for themselves.

Finally, the game configures people to communicate. In pursuit of Pokemones or in stadiums, where they are trained, people are found in the real world. And at a certain stage, according to the conditions of the game, they are simply forced to unite to win.

The game itself consists of several parts. First you are looking for and catch Pokemon. To do this, you need to throw in them a virtual ball. Pokemon can be everywhere, one recently found an employee of the Vedomosti on the desktop. But most of them are in places of accumulation of players (for example, near the "Yandex office") and near the so-called Pokestops. These are points where players can replenish the stock of balls and find other useful virtual items. After a certain level, players can put their pokemon on the fight on special sites, and then beat the team against the team. The places of these actions decided just thanks to the Ingress portals. "Two and a half years, people visited places where, in their opinion, it is more convenient to play ingress, so among them there are enough remote locations. There are portals in Antarctica and the North Pole, "he stated Hank in a conversation with Lazygamer.net.

But the mixing of the game with the real world creates some difficulties, recognizes Hank on the pages of The Time: "Our instructions for players are not only about how to play, but also to comply with the law and respect private property, politely communicate with other users. Last we try to inspire our users with all ways. The product design itself is specifically sharpened for it. This is not a game about how to beat someone. Gameplay (computer game script. - Vedomosti) friendly and, I think, contributes to positive social interaction. "

    Stunning interest

"We expected success and prepared for this infrastructure. But, if you feel honest, there were slightly stunned by the scale of interest, "said Khanka The Time. "We are now trying to maintain infrastructure so that it should cope with the influx of those who want to play." Russian Gamersha complained "Vedomosti", which, as soon as the United States comes in the morning, problems with access to the game server appear.

Pokemon Go is a free game, but for money users can simplify life, buying services and artifacts, for example, for accelerated monsters pumping. A similar strategy was at King Digital, which released in 2012 hit for Candy Crush smartphones, writes ft. In 2013, she acknowledged that 96% of users do not pay no cent. True, the remaining 4% allowed to show such financial results that in 2015 King Digital was sold to Activision Blizzard, the World of Warcraft manufacturer for $ 5.9 billion.

And in Ingress, and in Pokemon Go for a certain amount, any company can make a store or office place for the portal and the appearance of rare pokemon. McDonald's Ingress Partners, Telecommunication and Mediaorporation Softbank, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Banking Group Mitsubishi UFJ FINANCIAL GROUP. When Pokemon will appear in Russia, this list apparently will include domestic companies.

SINCE 2008, Hanke Has Been An Haas School Executive Fellow At The University of California, Berkeley, According to the School's Website.

    2. HE HELPED CREATE Google Earth

John Hanke Helped Developed Software Than Eventually Became Google Earth. (Google Play)

The Idea Of. Pokemon Go.actually popped up a FEW YEARS AGO WHEN GOVE, AS AN APRIL FOOL'S DAY JOKE, announced A FICTIONAL PRODUCT THAT INVOLVED CATCHING POKEMON USING Google Maps . That Isn't The Only Way Tues The Game Has Ties to Google, Though; The Creator Previous Worked for The Company.

In 2001, Hanke Founded the Startup Keyhole, Which Created A Program Called Earth Viewer. This Allowed Users to Explore The Globe Using Satellites And 3D Mapping Technology. It Gained Some Notoriety WHEN IT BEGAN TO BE Used by News Broadcasts, and in 2004, The Company Was BoughT by Google for $ 35 Million. Earth Viewer Was Later Renamed Google Earth.

Hanke Says He and His Team Brought This Experience To Pokemon Go..

"A LOT OF US WORKED ON Google Maps and Google Earth for Many, MANY YEARS, SO WE WANT THE MAPPING TO BEGOD," HE TOLD MASHABLE.

    3. He worked on the first mmorpg

Meridan 59 Was The First Major MMORPG. (Meridan59.com)

Pokemon Go.was Not Hanke's First Experience with Large Online Gaming. In FACT, He Helped Create The First Commercial Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, Meridan 59.Which Was Released on PC in 1996. It Was A Sword and Sorcery Game Which Required Players to Pay a Monhly Fee, As Is the Case with Modern MMORPGS LIKE World of Warcraft.

    4. He Created Ingress, Another Augmented Reality Game

SIMILAR TO POKEMON GO, INGRESS IS AN Online Game That Users Real-WORLD LOCATIONS. INGRESS)

Pokemon Go.iS In Some Ways An Evolution Of Another Game That John Hanke Created. Ingress., Released in 2012, IS A SCIENCE-FICTION Mobile Game in Which Players Must Work Together to Take Control of "Portals, Which Are Based on Real-Life Locations. These Portals Are Essentially The Equivalent of Poke Stops. IT's a Bit More Complicated Than Pokemon Go Butt It Follows a Similar Premise of Basing Its Map On Actual Places and On Having Players Join Teams and All Workards A GOAL.

Hanke Says That Both Games Are SO Fun and Popular As a Direct Result of the Fact That They're So Social.

"That Social Organization IS Exactly The Same Dynamic Here. WE SAW IT IN Ingress. AND WE'RE SEEING IT IN Pokémon Go., IT's Just in the Real World, "Hanke Said." SO Instead Of Getting Together With a Bunch of Avatars in a Virtual Guild Hall, You're Getting Together With Your Friends, Meeting and Going Out Together, Or Meeting Up With Them Some Place in the city. IT Just Blends In With Real Life, Which Makes It Infinitely More Interesting to Me Than Something That's Occurring Only in This Virtual Space. BECAUSE IT'S REAL. Real Friendships Are Forming. "

Ingress.iS NOT JUST A THING OF THE PAST, EITHER. It's Still Played In 200 Countries Around The World, and a game event Recently Held in Japan Saw Over 10,000 Participants, According To Time.

ALTHOUGH EVERYONE IS NOW FALLING IN LOVE WITH Pokemon GoHanke Says That WHEN Ingress.fIRST CAME OUT, A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE CONFUSED ABOUT THE PHENOMENON. HE SAW IT AS AN EXTREMELY POSITIVE THING FOR PLAYERS.

Hanke Explained, "WHEN JOURNALISTS REACH OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND ASK 'Why Are You Playing This Game? Why Are you Doing this? Is it WEIRD THAT PEOPLE ARE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT? 'THE RESPONSE IS,' IT'S AMAZING, IT'S CHANGED MY LIFE. I'Ve Met So Many New People, I'm Seeing The World in a Completely Different Way. I'm Walking Three Miles A Day and I Was Houseboound and Watching TV All Day Before I Started Playing This Game. 'It's Positive Story After Story. "

    5. He Says AUGMENTED REALITY IS THE FUTURE, NOT VIRTUAL REALITY

Companies Like Google and Sony Are Hard At Work on Virtual Reality Systems Like The Oculus Rift. But Hanke Believees That Games In The Same Vein AS Pokemon Gonot these Virtual Reality Headsets, Are The Future. HE SAID IN AN INTERVIEW THAT HE DOESN'T THINK PEOPLE ARE BUILT TOESNT TO SIT IN DARK ROOMS WITH ELECTRONICS ON THEIR HEAD, NOTING THAT HE'D RATHER HAVE THEM GO OUTSIDE AND INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER.

HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT WHILE VR REPLACES THE REAL WORLD WORLDASY, AUGMENTED REALITY SEEKS TO ADD TO THE REAL WORLD.

"IT's Not Something That Completely Replaces Them with a Fantasy Experience," He Said. "You See That With Pokemon Go.. There's of Course This Fantastical Pokémon Element, But Really It's Enhancing Your Experience of Going Out for Walk Or Doing Something With Friends. "
