    "George Ribbon"
    Relevance
In May 2015, Russia will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. Every year, from April 24 to May 12, since 2005, a large-scale action called "St. George's Ribbon" is held.
The action begins with the distribution of small pieces of ribbons by volunteers among the population.
Handing out tapes by the subway
People took them, fastened them on their chests,
Some for purses, some for cars.
Distributing tapes near the metro ...
They gave the Veteran a ribbon,
He hugged her to his chest
And in my eyes, suddenly, tears came out.
    That in these minutes flashed
In the memory of a hero and a soldier?
Maybe he remembered the enemy raid
Maybe a girl from a medical battalion? ..
How many roads have been covered
And in the heat and in severe frosts ...
    From memories to cheeks
All the tears rolled and rolled.
    An old, shabby jacket,
    Cane and hunched shoulders.
In that war he defended with his chest
    Our future meetings with you,
    Our kisses in the moonlight
Our happiness is in a small apartment
    To live with you now
And they walked calmly on the ground.
And we have no such right -
Forget the heroic feat of grandfathers!
How many lives did the war take
Before they got the victory ?!
How many of them died for the country,
    Without even leaving your name!
Handing out tapes by the subway
    Flame and smoke colored ribbons.
Yes, such a ribbon can often be seen on Victory Day! Orange and black stripes - what do they represent? Why did this ribbon become a symbol of Victory? All these questions haunted me. I decided to do some research and tell my classmates about it.
I set a goal for myself: to investigate why the St. George ribbon became a symbol of the Great Victory; to acquaint students of the gymnasium with the symbols and history of the St.George ribbon.
    Tasks:
    - learn the history of the St.George ribbon
    - to preserve the memory of the defenders of our Motherland
    Research methods
    1. Interviewing adults.
    2.Study of scientific, encyclopedic literature
    3. Search for information on the local Internet network.
    Hypothesis
We can assume that the St. George ribbon is used for decoration.
    Theoretical part
    1.1 Saint George the Victorious
Having studied the literature on this topic, I learned. Saint George the Victorious is the patron saint of all defenders of the Fatherland. George lived in the 1st century, he grew up in a Christian family, entered the service of the Roman army. He was courageous, fearless in battles, a brave warrior. George was a real defender, performed miracles of heroism and deeds. His most famous feat is the victory over the serpent that devoured people and ravaged their homes. As the legend says, when it fell out to give the royal daughter to be torn apart by the monster, George appeared on a horse and pierced the snake with a spear, saving the princess from death. This feat of George is depicted on the coat of arms of Moscow (slide with the coat of arms of Moscow). In those days, those who believed in Christ were killed. George did not renounce his faith, was tortured and killed.
The St. George Ribbon is a ribbon from the Order of St. George, approved at the beginning of the 18th century as an order for valor displayed in real combat. George ribbon and the order of St. George were reaffirmed as symbols of military honor and valor in 1992. Georgy's lenta is a two-color ribbon for the Order of St. George, the St. George Cross, the St. George Medal. Also, St. George ribbons on a peakless cap were worn by sailors of the ship's guards crew, awarded the St. George flag.
St. George's ribbons occupy the most honorable place among the numerous collective awards (distinctions) of units of the Russian army. The colors of the ribbon - black and yellow-orange - mean "smoke and flames" and are a sign of the soldier's personal prowess on the battlefield.
1.2. St. George's ribbon during the Great Patriotic War
During the Great Patriotic War, continuing the military traditions of the Russian army, on November 8, 1943, the Order of Glory of three degrees was established. Its statute, as well as the yellow-black color of the ribbon, reminded of the St. George's Cross. Then the St. George ribbon, confirming the traditional colors of Russian military valor, adorned many soldier's and modern Russian award medals and signs.
For heroic deeds in the Great Patriotic War, more than 11 thousand people were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (some posthumously), of which 104 - twice, three - three times (G.K. Zhukov, I.N. Kozhedub and A.I. Pokryshkin ). Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub shot down 62 enemy aircraft. Soviet pilots M.P. Zhukov, S.I.Zdorovtsev and P.T.
There are 87 women among the Heroes of the Soviet Union during the war. The first of this title was awarded to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya (posthumously). Komsomol member Zoya voluntarily joined a special partisan detachment. She twice went to the rear of the enemy. At the end of November 1941, while performing the second combat mission in the area of the village, Petrishchevo was captured by the Nazis. Despite the cruel torture, she did not betray military secrets and did not give her name.
    Promotion "St. George Ribbon"
On the eve of the Victory Day celebrations and the days of the campaign, each participant puts on a St. George ribbon on his lapel, hand, bag or car antenna as a token of memory of the heroic past, expressing respect for veterans, paying tribute to the memory of those who fell on the battlefield, gratitude to people who gave everything for the front during the Great Patriotic War. The purpose of this event, according to the initiators of the project, is "to create a symbol of the holiday", "an expression of our respect for veterans, a tribute to the memory of those who fell on the battlefield, gratitude to the people who gave everything for the front."
The scale of the action has a rather large territorial character. In 2005, 800 thousand ribbons were distributed; 1.2 million ribbons were distributed in 2006; In 2007, about 10 million tapes were distributed worldwide.
However, not all residents of Russia support the action. The website za-lentu.ru was created, which advocates for the St. George ribbon and considers the action extremely disrespectful to the symbol of Victory. First of all, opponents of the action are outraged by the use of the ribbon for commercial purposes, disrespectful tying it to clothes, bags and even pets. Participants of the action are considered by some media representatives as fascists or people who do not respect or appreciate the veterans of the Great Patriotic War. The moral aspect of this dilemma is extremely difficult, and, as it seems to me, each person decides for himself: either the ribbon is a tribute of respect, the personification of our gratitude, or the misuse of a part of the military award.
    Practical part
    Questionnaire
The St. George Ribbon has a glorious history and deserves that its colors symbolize the Great Victory. Among my classmates, I conducted a sociological survey: "What does the St. George Ribbon mean to you?" 21 respondents were interviewed, of whom 18 answered in various formulations - the symbol of Victory over Nazi Germany; 2 - I find it difficult to answer; 1 - I don’t know.
From the foregoing it follows that, in general, in our class, a stable association with the Victory of our people in the Great Patriotic War has been entrenched behind the St.George ribbon.
    Our affairs
Every year our class takes an active part in the action “We Remember! We are proud! ”, Its main symbol is the St. George ribbon. Thanks to my research work, the guys expanded their knowledge about the St.George ribbon. Now, to our traditional events, such things have been added as: congratulating veterans, laying flowers at the monument to the Unknown Soldier, congratulating city residents on the May 9 holiday and, of course, the action "St. George's Ribbon"
    CONCLUSION.
I came to the conclusion that the St. George Ribbon is a centuries-old symbol of Victory, an element of an award set for special military merits in hostilities.
My hypothesis was not confirmed St. George's ribbon is not a decoration, but an expression of our respect for veterans, a tribute to the memory of those who fell on the battlefield, gratitude to the people who gave everything for the front.
.. May Day is beautiful extraordinarily - Victory Day is celebrated by the country! Maybe it is not at all accidental - That the war ended in the spring?
It is no coincidence that on this wonderful day, In memory of the heroes of ancient years, - The petals of St. George's ribbons are now spreading everywhere.

In the Russian Empire, the St. George ribbon was one of the most important award symbols. It appeared after the decree of Catherine II in 1769 and became an addition to the St. George Cross, medal or the Order of St. George. It was named in honor of George the Victorious.

To get such a ribbon, one did not need to have a high military rank or noble origin: they were worn, for example, by sailors on ships that received the St. George flag.

At this point, it becomes clear why some are jarred by the massive use of such an important symbol. However, firstly, after the establishment of Soviet power, the St.George ribbon was canceled altogether. And secondly, during the Great Patriotic War, it was proposed in the fleet to use a guards tape, suspiciously similar to St. George's. It was worn on peakless sailors, whose ships received the rank of guards for successful military operations.

What does the St. George ribbon mean?

Now that it is clear where this symbolism came from, you can understand its meaning. The motto "For service and courage" was attached to the St. George ribbon, and she herself distinguished people who committed courageous deeds for the good of the Russian Empire.

Initially, black and yellow stripes alternated on the ribbon, then they were replaced by orange ones (and migrated to the guards). There is no malicious intent or change of symbolism here: both colors are options for displaying gold and in fact correspond to the colors of the coat of arms of the Russian Empire. It was then that the Soviet Navy slightly miscalculated ...

In any case, today there is no blasphemy in the use of black and orange ribbons: then the navy can be blamed for it. This symbol was not used separately in the imperial army, but during World War II it was supplemented with the name of the ship and anchors. So to talk about the fact that "the youth awarded themselves with the Cross of St. George" is wrong, and no one forces anyone to wear ribbons on a bag.

Educator: The story of the St. George ribbon came to us from the distant past. That was a long time ago. There are many legends about this, I will tell you one of them:
The legend is called "The Miracle of George about the Serpent"
“In a certain city a king ruled. The city he ruled flourished. But not far from the city, a monstrous Serpent settled in a swamp, which devastated the surroundings and devoured the inhabitants of the city.
Then the king gathered an army and went to the Serpent, but the monster raised a commotion in the swamp, and the army could not even come close to the Serpent.
To avoid death, the inhabitants of the city were forced to sacrifice their children to the Serpent. When it was the turn of the king's daughter Elisava, a beautiful young man on a white horse appeared - Saint George.
Seeing the crying girl, he began to ask her what was the matter, and she told him about the Serpent.
George went to battle with the Serpent, won a victory, saved the girl and the whole city from inevitable death.
    Thus, good defeated evil.
The inhabitants of the city, struck by the miracle, began to glorify St. George, retell his feat and depict his face. "
Images of St. George have been found since ancient times on coins and seals. Today his images can be seen in museums, on icons in cathedrals and on the coat of arms of the city of Moscow (illustrations can be shown).

The "St. George Ribbon" is shown on the screen. The teacher offers to compare the tapes.
Educator: This is how the ribbon was created, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil and tells us that "Good will always triumph over evil."
And a long time ago an order was invented, on which St. George was depicted. It was given to a person who had done a great good deed - a heroic deed - a concrete feat.
"those who ... distinguished themselves by what special courageous act or gave wise and useful advice for our military service."
This was an exceptional military award. They hung this order on the St. George ribbon.

Come on people, let's get up for a moment
And in sorrow we will stand and be silent.

Hello my dear readers. Victory Day celebrations are not far off. Numerous residents of the country will hang St. George's ribbons not only on their chests, but also on bags, cars, and even woven into their hair instead of ribbons. Do you know what the St. George ribbon means? Where did it come from, the designation of the stripes and colors? This is what I want to tell you today.

How the St. George ribbon appeared

The history of its appearance begins in the 18th century. The national colors of the Russian Empire were considered white, orange (yellow), black. The coat of arms of the country was decorated with these shades. On November 26, 1769, the Order of St. George the Victorious was established by Catherine II. It included a ribbon that received the name "Georgievskaya" in honor of this order, which was awarded for military services to generals and officers.

In 1807, another medal was approved - a sign of merit of the Military Order. This award was also dedicated to Saint George the Victorious. The unofficial name is St. George's Cross. Since 1913, non-commissioned officers and soldiers have been honored with the St. George medal.

All these awards were received along with the St. George ribbon. If for some reason the cavalier was not awarded the order, he received the St. George ribbon.

At the beginning of the 19th century, St. George's standards appeared. After the Marine Guards crew received this award in 1813, the sailors began to wear the St.George ribbon on their headdresses. For the distinction, ribbons were awarded to entire military units by order of Emperor Alexander II.

After the October Revolution of 1917, all tsarist medals were canceled by the Bolsheviks. But even after that, the ribbon was awarded for merit.

In the post-revolutionary period, the most respected insignia were considered "For the great Siberian campaign" and "For the ice campaign". These awards included St. George ribbons.

What do the colors and stripes mean?

The St. George ribbon, according to the statute, had two stripes in yellow and three in black. Although immediately instead of a yellow tint, orange was used.

Even Catherine the Great, establishing the color of the ribbon, relied on the meaning of yellow as a sign of fire, and black as a symbol of gunpowder. The black color is also interpreted as smoke, but this does not change the essence. Therefore, flames and smoke represent military glory and soldier's prowess.

There is another version. I have already said that I chose, in particular, this color scheme (gold, black), like the coat of arms of Russia.

In heraldry, it is customary to symbolize a black shade with mourning, earth, sadness, peace, death. The golden hue symbolizes strength, justice, respect, power. Therefore, the color scheme of the St. George ribbon combined respect for the heroes and participants of the battle, regret for its victims, glorification of the courage and strength of the fighters, at the cost of whose lives justice was restored.

Another version says that the color symbolism of these shades is associated with the face of George the Victorious, where he defeats the snake.

There is also a consideration that the stripes on the St. George ribbon personify the death and return to life of St. George the Victorious. He met death three times, and was resurrected twice.

It should be noted that there is still controversy over the designation of colors.

    Symbol

The St. George ribbon became a symbol of Victory on May 9, 1945. By the decree of the Presidium of the USSR Armed Forces, the medal "For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" was introduced from this date. It is with this ribbon that the block of the medal is covered.

The medal was awarded not only for special merits, but also to all participants in the hostilities. This honor was awarded even to those who left the service due to injury and transferred to another job.

The approximate number of awardees is around 15 million.

The Order of Glory was honored only for personal merits. Commanders, home front workers, developers of military equipment did not receive such an honor. The medal was awarded only to ordinary soldiers on the basis of the statute of the order:

    • Personal capture of a German officer.
    • Personal destruction of a mortar or machine gun in an enemy position.
    • Capture an enemy banner while ignoring your own safety.
    • Performing a military mission from a tank weapon while in a burning tank.
    • Providing assistance to the wounded in a number of battles under enemy fire at the risk of their lives.
    • Destruction of the bunker garrison (trench, bunker, dugout) in spite of the danger.
    • Removal or seizure of a sentry patrol (post, secret) of the enemy at night.
    • Destruction of an enemy warehouse with military equipment during a night sortie.
    • Saving a banner in a moment of danger from being captured by the enemy.
    • Creation of a passage in an enemy wire fence during hostilities.
    • When the wounded soldier returns to the battlefield again.

As you can see, my dear readers, the order was awarded to those who daily endangered their lives and really tried to do everything in the name of a great victory.

    How the tape was worn

The tape was worn in different ways. Everything depended on the class of the gentleman. Three options were possible:

    • On the neck.
    • In the buttonhole.
    • Over shoulder.

Can you imagine how proud the winners of this award felt? Also interesting is the fact that the soldiers who received this award also received a lifetime reward from the treasury. After the death of the awardees, the ribbon passed to their heirs. But the awards could be deprived if any act was committed that tarnished the reputation of the George Knight.

    St. George ribbon today

Every year on May 9, we see this ribbon in many people as a sign of respect for the fallen heroes of the war. This promotion originated in 2005. Its creator is Natalya Loseva, who works for RIA Novosti. This agency, in a tender with the ROOSPM "Student Community", are the organizers of the action. It is funded by local and regional authorities, supported by the media and businessmen. Volunteers distribute ribbons to everyone.

The purpose of the holiday is to express respect and gratitude to the veterans who died on the battlefield. When we wear the St. George ribbon, it means that we remember the Second World War and are proud of our valiant ancestors. The ribbon is distributed free of charge. Most often, we see it and wear it precisely during the celebration of Victory Day.

As you can see, dear readers of my blog, the history and significance of the St. George ribbon are important today. Do you wear this Victory Sign during the holiday? Share the article with your friends. And, of course, don't forget to subscribe to blog updates.

    Best regards, Ekaterina Bogdanova
