The story describes how a boy named Philip wanted to go to school like his older brother did, but his mother wouldn't let him.

Summary

There was a boy, his name was Philip. Once all the boys went to school. Philip took his hat and wanted to go too. But his mother left him at home. The guys went to school. The father left for the forest in the morning, and the mother went to work as a day laborer. Filippok and grandma remained in the hut on the stove. Filippok became bored alone, his grandmother fell asleep, and he began to look for his hat. I couldn’t find mine, so I took my father’s old one and went to school. Along the road, Filippok was chased by dogs.

He ran to the school. There is no one on the porch, but in the school you can hear the voices of the children buzzing. Filipp came over with fear. A woman with a bucket walked past the school and said: “Everyone is studying, but why are you standing here?”

He came, but was so confused that in response to the teacher’s questions he only remained silent and cried. Then the teacher felt sorry for him. He patted him on the head and asked the guys who this boy was.

The teacher left him in the classroom. “Well, sit on the bench next to your brother. And I’ll ask your mother to let you go to school.”

Despite the brevity of the story, the character of the boy is created in it. As soon as Filippok realizes that he wants to study at school, nothing can lead him astray, not the dogs that attacked him, nor the fear of the teacher. Not finding his hat, Filippok sets off on the journey in his father’s, which is too big for him, but at hand. In the school building, the boy takes off his hat and only after that opens the door: he is well acquainted with peasant etiquette. Having recovered from the first fright, he pronounced his name, and although everyone laughed, he began to “say the Mother of God” to show that he knew prayers; but “every word he spoke was wrong.” The teacher stopped him: “Don’t boast, but learn.”

The desire to learn at an early age can influence later life. Filippka's determination was rewarded. The boy was brave and courageous. The dog attack did not force him to run home. And although he cried out of fear of the teacher, he conquered himself. The teacher showed how important it is to be modest.
